Traditional Mainframe Outsourcing
Any transitions associated with mainframe hardware, tape and storage in a company is done to a vendor’s data centre. The vendor will provide the IBM software and the third-party software products as well. This creates great financial benefit, however, there are some constraints or risks in shifting the client’s mainframe terrain into the vendor’s data centre. The risk is minimal in comparison to the disaster recovery test, through a financial scale, the vendor can provide the services that can help the users with their savings, enabling them to leverage their facilities, team, hardware and software licenses.
Onsite Management
In this model, the vendor performs its task on the mainframe environment at the client’s site. This also includes sometimes the vendor hired for the client’s staff that are involved in supporting the mainframe.
Furthermore, vendors will acquire access to customer’s hardware and provide them with software licenses. This in turn lowers the traditional risk, as there is no movement or change of location of the client’s mainframe equipment. This scenario provides minimal traditional risk because a client’s mainframe equipment remains in place, but the financial gains are comparatively lower than traditional outsourcing models.
Remote Management
In this third model, the responsibility of the hardware and software environment remains with the client, while the vendors provide the array of technical and operational services remotely. This scenario is not meant for great financial benefits but it can be implemented quickly and also it has low risk compared to others. Remote management is one of the best options for clients who have some doubts about outsourcing and its workflow, it helps the clients and allows them to add the depth of staffing and support instantly. It is considered to be the first step toward mainframe outsourcing for the companies who have less experience with outsourcing.
